There are opportunities in almost every facility to reduce energy consumption and energy cost. Although facilities vary greatly in their use of energy and the potential for reducing energy consumption, one or more of the following conditions generally applies at any facility creating opportunities to conserve energy:

  • Systems are designed for worse case "design conditions" and operate most of the time at less than design conditions.
  • System designers add margin on top of design conditions to be confident the system will perform. Energy efficiency many times is not the first priority in system design.
  • Space usage or system requirements have changed over time.
  • Equipment is purchased on a lowest first cost basis rather than a life cycle basis.
  • Higher efficiency equipment has evolved since the existing equipment was installed.
  • Equipment is worn and operating at low efficiency.
  • Controls have failed and equipment is operating inefficiently.
  • Personnel are unaware of the energy use incurred from unnecessary operation of equipment and systems
